Early years expansion

2020 brings wide-spread changes for early years workers and hundreds of new jobs… here’s how Unite will help

There are big changes to come for early year workers in 2020. The Scottish Government have increased the free hours of early learning and childcare from 600 to 1,140. The new hours come into force in August 2020, but some nurseries are offering the longer hours already.

Read about the early years expansion on the Council’s site.

What this means

Some nurseries that only operated during term-time will be open all year round. Some nurseries will extend their hours. Almost all are changing the service they provide.

All of this means

  • potential changes for existing staff
  • recruitment of hundreds of early years workers.

What we’re doing to help workers

Unite are the union of early years workers.

We will represent and advise workers that are being asked to change their working patterns or workplace to ensure that the changes don’t impact them negatively.

We are supporting members that are interested in the new jobs coming up, by offering advice and support for their professional development, such as help with

  • completing the job application
  • interview skills
  • understanding what’s required when working early years.
